Four Things You Should Know About Dog Obedience Training
A dog can bring a lot of fun and joy into your life, but without proper training you can be in for a lot of frustration and headaches. Dog obedience training can be a lot of hard work, but the benefits of having a well-trained dog are innumerable. When your dog is trained well, you can have a much more relaxed, peaceful relationship. You as the owner will feel more confident in your dog as you can count on him or her to obey faithfully.
There are a variety of training methods, including (but not limited to) clicker training, reward training, and marker training. There are benefits and drawbacks to each method, and certain methods will work better with some dogs or breeds than others. It is up to you, as the owner, to choose what will work best for you and your dog.
Whatever method you choose, there are some basic dog obedience training tips that are effective across the board. Understanding these four basic concepts will help you train a well-disciplined dog, regardless of size, breed, or temperament.
1. Be persistent
Dog obedience training will rarely result in overnight changes. Expecting your dog to understand and obey commands immediately will only result in frustration for you and confusion for your dog. Effective training takes constant repetition and a lot of persistence.
Your dog is looking to you for how to behave, and most dogs will do anything to please their master. As you repeat commands again and again, and reward good behavior, your dog will pick up on your approval and will begin to connect the commands with the behavior.
2. Use positive reinforcement
Rewards and loads of praise are the best corrective measures you can use in dog obedience training. Unlike children, dogs don’t understand the idea of consequences, so punishing a dog will just be confusing for him and generally won’t correct the bad behavior. Obviously, hitting or yelling at a dog for misbehaving is counterproductive and will only result in fear.
Instead of punishing bad behavior, shower your dog with praise (and treats in the beginning) when he has exhibited the correct behavior. Use a key word to reward your dog like “good girl” in addition to lots of petting and dog treats. The dog will associate the reward word with the good behavior and you can slowly phase out giving treats as a reward.
3. Don’t punish ignorance
Punishing your dog for misbehaving in areas he is untrained in is simply unfair to the dog. If you haven’t trained your dog to correct the behavior, your dog will not associate the punishment with the behavior and will just feel hurt and afraid.
Again, training will take time. Be patient with your dog as you teach proper behaviors one step at a time.
4. Go slow
Flooding your dog with commands in training will confuse him. Teach one command at a time, and stick with it until she has mastered it. It can take over 100 repetitions for a dog to really get a command down pat, so don’t give up if you don’t see quick results. Your dog won’t learn overnight, so go slow and be patient. Keep at it and you will see progress.
